The hallway smelled the same every morning.

Bleach and something underneath the bleach that bleach could never fully reach.

Fluorescent lights that hummed at a frequency just below what you could name but your body felt it anyway. Doors that locked from one side.

The cart wheels needed oil and nobody had gotten around to it and probably nobody was going to.

He pushed it the same way every morning.

Four towns shared one dentist.

Not because they had to. Because he was the kind of man you didn't replace. He remembered your children's names without looking at the chart.

He let you pay when you could and didn't call when you couldn't yet. Kids who couldn't afford braces got braces. Parents who couldn't afford to know that sat in the waiting room reading magazines from three months ago and left without knowing.

That was just who he was.
